Did You Know? Michigan Has So Many Family Adventures, I Couldn’t Choose Just One

When I started this 50 States, 50 Vacations series, I thought finding an unexpected vacation idea in each state would be the hard part.
Turns out, the hard part is choosing just one.
I've had that problem with every state I've researched so far, but Michigan finally got me. Every time I thought I had found this week's adventure, I found something
completely different that made me stop and think, wait...Michigan has that too?
So this week, instead of choosing just one, I’m starting with one that feels especially perfect for the season — and then I’m sharing a few more Michigan surprises I found along the way.
🌳 Walk Above the Trees at SkyBridge Michigan
The first one I have to share is SkyBridge Michigan at Boyne Mountain.
The bridge sits about 120 feet above the ground and stretches across the valley
between two ski mountains, offering beautiful views of the rolling hills and northern Michigan landscape. A scenic chairlift ride is part of the experience, so even getting to the bridge becomes part of the adventure.
I can only imagine what it looks like surrounded by Michigan's fall colors.
But then I discovered SkyBridge after dark during the holiday season.
The bridge itself is transformed with thousands of twinkling lights for Boyne Mountain's Lights in the Sky experience. The nearby Mountain Grand Lodge & Spa
gets dressed up for the holidays too, creating an entirely different experience from the colorful fall views.
Boyne Mountain also hosts seasonal holiday activities, which can include things like Santa visits, bonfires, crafts, family movies, holiday treats and other festivities.
Now I'm not sure which version I would choose: walking high above the fall colors or crossing the bridge at night surrounded by Christmas lights.
And Boyne Mountain doesn't stop at the bridge. Boyne Mountain is a full resort experience with skiing in the winter, the Avalanche Bay indoor waterpark, indoor and outdoor swimming areas, Deer Lake beach, ziplining, golf and plenty of other seasonal
activities.
What started as me finding an interesting bridge quickly turned into a place where a family could easily build an entire getaway.

✈️ The Air Zoo Aerospace & Science Museum
The Air Zoo is one Michigan adventure I can speak about from experience. From the outside, I remember it looking almost like a factory. I thought my husband had brought me to another airplane museum, but once we walked inside, it was completely different.
It felt like a small amusement park and an educational museum rolled into one, especially for younger kids. There were paper airplane making stations, short films, hands-on exhibits and rides. In the restoration area, we were even able to explore inside some of the aircraft.
Instead of children just following adults around looking at displays, there were things everywhere inviting them to stop, touch, create and explore. It is still one of the coolest places I have seen that was designed so well for little kids while still being interesting for the adults with them.
The Air Zoo, located in Portage near Kalamazoo, features more than 100 historic aircraft and spacecraft, along with flight simulators, rides and exhibits covering aviation and space history.

💧 Cross a Crystal Clear Spring on a Raft
Michigan also has Kitch-iti-kipi, sometimes called the Big Spring, inside Palms Book State Park in the Upper Peninsula.
It is Michigan's largest natural freshwater spring, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports that approximately 10,000 gallons of water flow through it each minute. The water is so clear that visitors can look down from a self-propelled observation raft and see trout, submerged tree trunks and the spring bubbling beneath them.
I think this is one of those places where a photograph would make me curious, but actually standing over that water would be completely different.

🍄 Houses That Look Like They Belong in a Storybook
Then there are the Mushroom Houses of Charlevoix.
These unusual stone homes were created by Earl Young, who designed houses to blend into the land around them instead of reshaping the property to fit the house. Their curved roofs, stone walls and whimsical shapes have earned them names like Mushroom Houses, Gnome Homes and Hobbit Houses.
They really do look like something you would expect to find in a storybook rather than a Michigan neighborhood.
The homes are privately owned, so they are meant to be admired respectfully from public areas.

⭐ What If the Adventure Starts After Dark?
Michigan surprised me again when I started looking into its dark skies.
The state has several protected places known for stargazing, including Headlands International Dark Sky Park near Mackinaw City. The park sits along Lake Michigan and is protected from much of the artificial light that makes stars harder to see around cities.
And this one led me down another rabbit hole because just a short distance away is McGulpin Point Lighthouse, while other dark sky areas in Michigan also offer camping.
Apparently even nighttime can become part of a Michigan vacation.

🏚️ Step Into an Old Michigan Town
And because Michigan apparently wasn't finished surprising me, I found Fayette Historic State Park in the Upper Peninsula.
Between 1867 and 1891, Fayette was a busy iron smelting community. Today, visitors can walk through preserved historic buildings and see what remains of the old town while surrounded by forests, Lake Michigan and tall limestone cliffs.
So this isn't just a history stop. The setting itself is part of what makes it unusual.

So...Which Michigan Adventure Fits Your Family?
I started researching Michigan thinking I needed to choose one adventure.
I still can't.
One family might spend hours looking at airplanes and space exhibits. Another might want to walk above the trees. Someone else may choose crystal clear water, unusual houses, historic places or a night underneath a sky filled with stars.
And that's exactly why I don't think every family should have the same vacation.
