What if I told you there is a place in Michigan where your family can explore more than 100 aircraft and spacecraft, enjoy indoor amusement rides, watch a short movie and even take control of a full-motion flight simulator?

Why the Air Zoo Makes a Great Family Stop

The Air Zoo in Portage, just outside Kalamazoo, is not what most families picture when they hear the word museum. It combines aviation history with hands-on science, indoor rides, and flight simulators, giving adults time to enjoy the aircraft while children still have plenty to explore. With more than 100 air and space artifacts spread across two buildings, it can easily become the main activity of a family weekend getaway.

What Families Can Experience

·       Explore more than 100 aircraft and spacecraft

·       Try the flight simulators and indoor amusement rides

·       Discover hands-on science activities and aviation history

·       Visit the second building and watch aircraft restoration work

Is the Air Zoo Enough for a Vacation?

When I first heard about the Air Zoo, I was actually passing a sign for it. My husband knew exactly where we were going—it was a surprise. My first thought was probably the same as yours: What is this? Oh my…another airplane museum. (Yes, that was all the excitement I had in my head.)

Oh, I was so wrong.

This museum had just as much fun for the little ones as it did for someone like me who is not a plane enthusiast. There were so many interesting things to see and touch. You can climb into a cockpit and push the buttons or see what it might feel like to ride in a hot-air balloon basket. The rides were fun for us as well as the little ones, and it was amazing to experience some of them together.

But is the Air Zoo enough to plan a vacation around? The answer is yes—with the right kind of trip. I would make it the main attraction of a two-night Southwest Michigan getaway, then add one or two nearby stops so the family has a full weekend to enjoy. The Air Zoo will keep all members of your family entertained.
