Well, Welcome to Tennessee.

50 States, 50 Vacations Stop #6: Tennessee

She not only left us with songs.

Dolly Parton left us with stories, dreams—and a place where generations of families can laugh, explore and make memories together.

As the world remembers Dolly and everything she gave us, it feels fitting to visit the Tennessee mountains that shaped her life.

This Dollywood family vacation stop in my 50 States, 50 Vacations series is more than a visit to a theme park, it is a journey into Dolly’s beloved Smoky Mountains and a celebration of the remarkable legacy she created there.

A Little Girl With Great Big Dreams

Dolly Parton was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, and grew up as one of twelve children in a small mountain home.

The music, stories, natural beauty and people of the Smokies remained part of her throughout her life.

She carried those mountains with her as she became a singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist—but she never forgot where she came from.

In 1986, she helped transform a Pigeon Forge theme park into Dollywood, creating jobs for her community and welcoming families from around the world to experience the music, craftsmanship, hospitality and beauty of East Tennessee.

Dollywood Is More Than a Theme Park

Dollywood combines exciting attractions with the warmth and traditions of the Smoky Mountains.

Families can experience:

  • Roller coasters and attractions for different ages

  • Live country, bluegrass and gospel entertainment

  • Demonstrations by talented Appalachian artisans

  • Seasonal festivals, decorations and special events

  • Southern food and famous cinnamon bread

  • Play areas and gentler attractions for younger children

  • Thrilling rides for older children, teenagers and adults

  • Shops featuring regional crafts and gifts

Dollywood continues to grow while preserving the mountain culture that made it special.

The park’s newest experiences join longtime family favorites, giving families reasons to return during different seasons.

It is exciting without losing its heart—and that feels very much like Dolly.

Turn Dollywood Into a Complete Family Vacation

This is not merely a one-day roadside stop. Dollywood can become the centerpiece of a complete Tennessee family vacation.

Families can stay at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa or Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort, where the Smoky Mountain atmosphere continues after the park closes.

Cabins and other accommodations are also available throughout Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Gatlinburg.

A longer trip could include:

  • Two or more days at Dollywood

  • A summer day at Dollywood’s Splash Country

  • A family dinner show in Pigeon Forge

  • Shopping and attractions around Gatlinburg

  • Scenic drives through Great Smoky Mountains National Park

  • Easy walks, waterfalls and wildlife viewing

  • A quiet cabin evening overlooking the mountains

That variety makes the area work for young children, grandparents, couples and multigenerational families. Some family members can chase roller-coaster thrills while others enjoy music, craftsmanship, mountain scenery or a slower day at the resort.

The Mountains That Inspired Her

No Dollywood vacation would feel complete without spending time in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

These mountains are more than a beautiful backdrop. They influenced Dolly’s music, storytelling and generous spirit. When you travel through them, you begin to understand why she remained so connected to this corner of Tennessee.

The Smokies are special to me, too.

I was married in Gatlinburg, rode through the Smoky Mountains on a motorcycle and had wedding photographs taken inside the national park.

The winding roads, mountain views and peaceful forest made the area part of my own story long before I began planning vacations for other families.

That personal connection is one reason I believe this destination deserves more than a quick visit.

Slow down, leave room in the schedule and give your family time to experience the mountains—not simply drive past them on the way to the next attraction.

Her Legacy Reaches Far Beyond the Park

Dolly’s greatest legacy may not be measured in records sold or attractions built.

In 1995, she started the Imagination Library in her home county. The program began with a simple goal: to place books into the hands of young children and help families make reading part of everyday life.

That hometown idea eventually grew far beyond Tennessee and reached children around the world.

She showed us that dreams can begin in the smallest places—and that success means even more when it is used to lift others.

Dollywood reflects that same spirit. It celebrates family, imagination, music, hard work and pride in where you come from.

A Place Where Her Story Continues

Children may arrive excited about the rides. Parents and grandparents may come for the music or nostalgia. But families leave having shared something that belongs to all of them.

Dolly may no longer be standing on a Dollywood stage, but her presence remains throughout the destination ... in the music, mountain traditions, hospitality and families making new memories together.

That may be the most meaningful way to honor Dolly: visit the mountains she loved, listen to the stories she preserved and keep dreaming as boldly as she did.

Thank You, Dolly

Thank you, Dolly, for the songs, the stories, the laughter, the books placed in the hands of children and the memories families will continue making in the mountains you loved.

God bless Dolly Parton. May her music, generosity and Smoky Mountain spirit continue inspiring dreamers for generations to come.
